The New Largest Seagrass Meadow in Cabo Verde

THE NEW LARGEST SEAGRASS MEADOW IN CABO VERDE: new title goes to Porto Lobo!

32,116 m2 (3.21 hectares) this is the size of the largest seagrass (Holodule wrightii) meadow confirmed today. Until now, the meadow of Gamboa (Praia) with 5,100 -6,000 m2 was considered the largest. But today, after the analysis of the survey results of the last two weeks, the first place goes to the bay of Porto Lobo, Sao Domingos, Santiago.

Seagrass play a key role in climate regulation through carbon sequestration, chemical regulation and quality of seawater, provide habitats for various marine species for feeding, breeding and refuge.

We thank our volunteers and fishers from Praia e Baía, Nossa Sra da Luz for their assistance. In collaboration with Prof. W.J.Szymaniak/UniPiagetCV (scuba research)
